MHA #6, Monday Morning

After a couple of weird and busy weekends, in that order, it had been nice to have one that was just... normal. As normal as Fandom ever gets, anyway. So, you know. Nice, normal weekend, and hopefully a nice, normal week following it...

The weird thing, though, was that Liam was sleeping in. Really sleeping in, and not his usual "woke up and went for a run and then crawled back into bed to snuggle" or "woke up and read for a few hours", either. Genuine, honest-to-god, asleep sleeping in. Which was definitely the first clue that something was amiss, because that only ever happened on those weekends. You know the ones.

Except this was a Monday. And everyone knew the weird shit didn't happen on Mondays (unless the island was hopping through various alternate realities, of course.). So Liam could possibly be forgiven for not having any idea that anything was strange just yet, sleepily reaching for Verity to pull her in closer.

"I get it, I think," Liam mused. "Like, it was... startling. To wake up like this. But it doesn't feel wrong, exactly," he admitted. "Not like..." Not like having Robert's memories rattling around in his skull, nightmares that left him terrified that his thoughts weren't really his own.

"It's still you, no matter what you look like."

And after a summer where that wasn't true, it was kind of hard to get all excited over a change that was purely physical.

"I promise I'm not about to go flying off into the woods," Liam said. And look, he was even making a dumb joke about one of the worst points of the summer, in his experience! That was progress. "But maybe it's a little weird that I'm not weirded out by it?"

Verity nodded. "I would have put money on you waking up and freaking out," she said. "Maybe because I did? Or maybe just because I'd figure it was one change too many? But then, I figured I'd be more weirded out by this, too."

She wasn't ready to push Liam down and ravish him, but she wasn't having any kind of heterosexual freakout either.

The lack of ravishing was unfortunate, but maybe they could work up to that? There was a not-insignificant part of Liam that hoped so, anyway.

"And it's not like the times we were kids, either," where he'd also arguably been himself. But those experiences had definitely been unsettling. Definitely fun, at times, but underneath it had been this feeling that something hadn't been right.

Hell, Verity hadn't even had coffee yet. This was all going remarkably well for a reaction without her caffeine hit.

Afterwards, who knew?

But still, even if she couldn't offer hot'n'heavy makeouts right now, she could give her boyfriend the other thing he loved a lot. She slid her hand up into his hair - longer than hers right now - and started massaging his scalp. "Just remember, it'll probably be a little weirder when you start moving around," she warned. "So don't go too fast, okay? I speak from experience."

Liam let out a contented noise, somewhere between a sigh and a moan, that was probably also supposed to be a signal of agreement.

“Love you,” he mumbled around a mouthful of eggs. “So you know.”

"Even though I troll you before breakfast?" Verity teased, using her nails to really give him a good scalp rub.

"Even so," Liam agreed, eyes half-closing as he just... let himself enjoy this.

Verity kissed him again - his forehead this time. But again, not because girl, but because he was eating. "We're going to have to get you clothes, you know," she pointed out. "You're not going to fit into any of mine, you Amazon."

Was Verity pouting? Verity was pouting.

“Oh!” Liam grinned. “Hey, yeah, you’re right.” A beat. “I didn’t mean it like that...” it was the ‘going clothes shopping’ part that had piqued his interest more than the ‘still taller than Verity’ part.

"Shall we go a little later then?" Verity suggested. "Give you something to wear besides that mesh shirt."

Verity very much liked that mesh shirt, okay?

“You’d let me wear that shirt again?” Liam asked hopefully. Verity had pretty solidly claimed it as hers, after all.

"I mean, straight but still fully aware how hot you'd be in it," Verity said, leaning against him. "It would kind of be a crime to not let you wear it."

Liam beamed at Verity, wrapping one arm around her as she leaned in. “Best girlfr- ooh, no. Fiancée.”

God, that was still so great to say.

"Okay, but I will throw down if the island pulls this when we are getting married. There's going to be exactly one bitch in a white dress and it's me," Verity declared, hands on her hips.

And that got a peal of laughter out of Liam. “I promise if the island does this to us on whatever date we pick, I won’t wear a dress.” A beat. “Bet I’d look hot as hell in a tailored suit, anyway.”

"Okay, that's a fair point," Verity said, and started finger-combing Liam's hair, pulling it back away from his face and up into a semi-complicated knot. "And a nice business-like updo? Hot."

Her fingers on his scalp had felt so good, but so did this, familiar and unfamiliar all at once, the feeling of her fingers playing with his hair sending warm tingles down his spine.

"Wouldn't mind trying one on while I'm like this, though," he admitted. "Y'know. Just to see."

"I mean, why not?" Verity asked practically. "Get a couple of outfits that make you feel badass and then you have a wardrobe for the next time Fandom pulls its bullshit."

"Could go real crazy and slip a color or two in there," Liam said dryly, because look, sometimes he could be self-aware.

"Whoa, whoa," Verity said, shaking her head. "Let's not go too crazy here. You show up in colors and how am I going to know which new hot blonde chick on the island is my fiance?"

Liam just smirked and held out a hand, palm-up, mark of the shaqarava plainly visible.

"I won't have any logic sass from you," Verity declared, biting down on Liam's neck.

Not hard, exactly. But firm.

Any retort Liam had was abandoned in favor of a somewhat undignified soft little moan. Looks like that particular erogenous zone had survived the physical transformation.
